Science in Motion Workshops

Science in Motion (SIM) hosts teacher workshops for biology, chemistry, and middle school teachers.  Introductory level workshops familiarize teachers new to SIM with our most popular labs.  Advanced workshop topics vary year-to-year and are based on teacher interest.  Some workshops are developmental, and allow teachers to work on creating new lab activities or improving old ones.

In a summer 2008 workshop, Jim Gooch created a game to teach integrated pest management to biology students.  He is further developing the game – it will be coming soon!  The middle school workshop devoted some time to environmental concerns; this energy powerpoint was presented by Sharon Yohn.  Many materials, including videos, were developed for the safety workshop.  In the nanotechnology workshop, biology and chemistry teachers worked together to synthesize silver nanoparticles, analyze them, and test their ability to inhibit bacterial growth.

Plans for summer workshops are made during the spring at meeting with teachers.  Check back here for more details in early 2009!
