- 7:30 pm - Lecture Series: Bill Strickland
Rosenberger Auditorium [Show/Hide Description]"With his potter's hands, Bill Strickland is reshaping the business of social change. His Pittsburgh-based program offers a national model for education, training and hope." -Fast Company As a Pittsburgh youth besieged by racism in the crumbling remains of the steel economy, Bill Strickland should have been one of the Rust Belt's casualties. Instead, he discovered the potter's wheel, and the transforming power of fountains, irrepressible dreams, and the slide show. Bill Strickland's journey from at-risk youth to 1996 MacArthur "Genius" grant recipient would be remarkable in itself, if it were not overshadowed by the staggering breadth of his vision. While moonlighting as an airline pilot, Strickland founded Manchester Bidwell, a world-class institute in his native Pittsburgh devoted to vocational instruction in partnership with big business -- and, almost incidentally, home to a Grammy-winning record label and a world-class jazz performance series. Yet its emphasis on the arts is no accident, as it embodies Strickland's conviction that an atmosphere of high culture and respect will energize even the most troubled students. With job placement rates that rival most universities, Manchester Bidwell's success has attracted the attention of everyone from George Bush, Sr. (who appointed Strickland to a six-year term on the board of the NEA) to Fred Rogers (who invited Strickland to demonstrate pot throwing on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood). And though cumbersome slide trays have been replaced by PowerPoint, the inspirational power of his speeches and slide shows are the stuff of lecture circuit legend. www.bill-strickland.org Purchase Make the Impossible Possible. This event is free of charge and open to the entire community.

- 7:30 pm - Lecture Series: Meghan McCain
Alumni Hall (A100), Brumbaugh Academic Center [Show/Hide Description]As the daughter of U.S. Senator John McCain, Meghan was propelled into the national spotlight at an early age, involved in everything from community events to national conventions. Meghan's unparalleled exposure to American politics gave her the opportunity to hear voters debate the most complex issues first-hand from the campaign trail. As a result, her unique perspective and bold approach has not only galvanized a younger generation of Republicans; Meghan has launched a national movement to redefine Republican stereotypes and values: "I am concerned about the environment. I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people's lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican." Raised in Phoenix, Arizona, McCain graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Art History. With ambitions to pursue a career in music journalism, she completed internships at Newsweek and Saturday Night Live before joining her father's 2008 presidential campaign. To give Americans a real sense of life behind the-scenes on the campaign trail, Meghan launched McCainBlogette.com: "The blog, for me, was showing young women they could be interested in politics and everything else. I chose to show that I'm a real person with shortcomings, and that this is my life." mccainblogette.com Purchase Meghan McCain's book My Dad, John McCain.
