Frequently Asked Questions at Orientation
If my son/daugher needs FTP capability, is it available? Is there an additional cost?
CTS provides FTP accounts to students, faculty, and administration for academic or work related needs.
If I currently own and use an anti-virus product, do I have to change to the one provided by the college?
No, the registration system supports most anti-virus products. If you need antivirus software, Sophos is provided free of charge to all students. Click here for instructions on how to install Sophos anti-virus.
I have a personal firewall set up on my son's/daughter’s machine. Do I have to disable it when they come to Juniata?
No.
Where do we get VPN? Is there a cost?
The VPN client that comes with Microsoft Windows XP will work with our VPN Server at no additional cost to students, faculty, and administrators.
Do we push anti-virus updates to student machines?
No. Students are responsible for downloading and running all current anti-virus and anti-spyware patches and updates.
Kazaa comes with the share feature activated. What should we do?
We can help you turn that feature off. Uploading protected files is a major copyright issue for all colleges and universities. The college is at risk if we allow uploads from our network, so if the user refuses to turn off the sharing feature, we will be forced to disconnect the PC from the network.
Should my son/daughter bring a printer?
Printers are available in the labs and in many classrooms, as well as the library. Students should not need personal printers in their rooms.
Mac or PC?
Both are acceptable, and we have buying agreements with both Apple and Dell.
VPN client for Mac?
A compatible VPN client is built into Mac OS X and can be configured in the Internet Connect application. (Macintosh HD > Applications > Internet Connect)
Is network gaming supported?
Students must register their gaming device with CTS in order to use it on the network. Bandwidth for gaming is also limited.
Can I connect to my son or daughter's computer from home using VNC?
No, our firewall prevents access to all internal clients, including student computers.
