Remote Access for the Macintosh

I. Requirements

  • Working Mac running MacOS 8.5 or higher.
  • Working 14.4 KPS or faster modem.
  • DAVE Client (if you want to connect to shares from MacOS 8.5 - 9.x)

II. Remote Access on MacOS 8.5 – 9.x

  1. Open the TCP/IP control panel, and choose "PPP" from the "Connect via:" drop-down list.
  2. Choose "Using PPP Server" from the "Configure:" drop-down list.
  3. In the "Name server addr.:" box, type: 172.16.17.16
  4. In the "Search domains" box, type: juniata.edu
  5. Close the TCP/IP control panel and click OK.
  6. Open the Remote Access control panel.
  7. If the Setup area isn't already expanded, click the triangle to make it point down.
  8. Click the button next to "Registered User".
  9. For "Name", type: <domain>\<username> (do not type the < or >)
  10. For "Password", type the password you use to get into the Windows NT network on campus
  11. For "Number", use 643-5294.
  12. Click "Connect".

III. Remote Access on MacOS X (and higher)

  1. Open the System Preferences application and choose Network.
  2. In the “Show:” list, select Internal Modem.
  3. On the TCP/IP tab, choose “Using PPP” from the “Configure:” list.
  4. Under “Domain Name Servers”, enter: 172.16.17.16
  5. Under “Search Domains”, enter: juniata.edu
  6. Choose the PPP tab and enter the information as you see in the screenshot below. You only need to enter your password here if you want it to be saved.

7. Click the Apply Now button at the bottom of the window and close the System Preferences application.

8. Open the Internet Connect application (located under <Your Hard Drive>!Applications)

9. If you did not save a password in the System Preferences, enter your EagleNet password.

10. Click “Connect” to dial and logon.

IV. Connecting to Network Shares in MacOS 8.5 – 9.x

DAVE from Thursby Software (http://www.thursby.com) is required to connect to the U: and P: drives. Please refer to the DAVE documentation and the EagleNet DAVE documentation (document forthcoming) for instructions.

V. Connecting to Network Shares in MacOS X

1. From your desktop or Finder, click on the Go menu, and choose “Connect to Server…”. (You can also press "+k)

2. In the “Address:” field, enter: smb://<name of server>/<name of share>. In the example below, John Q. Public is a student connecting to his U: drive on SERVER2. Users in the ADMINISTRATION domain would connect to OSERVER1. For the P: drive, you would enter: smb://server2.juniata.edu/public

3. When the login box appears, enter your domain, username, and EagleNet password.

VI. Exchange E-mail access

Campus e-mail can be read through Microsoft Exchange for the Macintosh or through Microsoft Outlook for Macintosh. Both can be acquired on CD or floppy disk from the Help Desk. Outlook can also be downloaded from Microsoft’s website at: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/outlook2001/outlook2001.asp
