POE Requirements

The following courses are required for a POE in Biology Secondary Education
General Science and Math Requirements: 27 credits

Chemistry: CH 105 and CH 121, CH 106 and CH 122, and CH 230; 11 credits.

Physics: Either PC 200 and 201 or PC 202 and PC 203 each with PC 206 and PC 207, 8 credits.

Mathematics: Two courses including MA 130 (Calculus I), BI 305 (Biostatistics) recommended as the second mathematics course as it fulfills both an elective in upper level biology and the second math course, 7-8 credits.

Geology (GL 100 & 101), 4 credits.

General Biology Requirements: 30 credits (23 credits specified, 8 upper level elective)
A minimum of 15 credit hours of advanced biology coursework. (Biology designated courses numbered in the 300's and 400's).  Qualifying courses have a BI designation.  Approved Biology transfer credits and the following courses also qualify: CH 301, CH 416, ESS 320, ESS 325, PY 337.  Note: If Biostatistacs (BI 305) is taken to fulfill the mathematics requirement under "General Coursework Requirements", it can also be counted toward 4 of the 8 upper-level elective Biology requirements specified in this section, thereby reducing total number of courses you must take.

Required Biology Requirements (23 credits)
The following courses must be taken. Substitutions and transfer credit require the approval of the Biology Department.

Students seeking teacher certification complete Biology courses (31 credits); additional courses in sciences, math, and English to meet general certification requirements (29 credits); and education courses plus student teaching (37 credits).  To complete the program in four years, students must plan carefully. For students interested in Study Abroad, the Biology and Education Departments strongly recommend summer study abroad as a good way to complete some liberal arts distribution requirementsThe Biology/ Secondary Education POE (94 -98credits) combined with all other graduation requirements (courses in parentheses) =~122-126 credits.
