With snow and ice knocking on our door, it is important for us to remind you to be observant to any safety hazards caused by winter conditions around your buildings or on campus. Bear in mind that once a winter storm has left the area, dangers remain. That “Winter Wonderland” can create potentially fatal safety problems if ignored or overlooked.

The following are winter safety concerns that you should report immediately to Public Safety, Facilities or our office if encountered or observed and you feel endangers the safety/ welfare of students and staff: ice patches on sidewalks or steps, ice or snow falling from roofs above entrances to buildings, dangerous icicles hanging above entrances to buildings or outside of a resident‘s window and areas where snow has fallen during the night or early morning that melts as temperatures rise during the day, but will freeze to an icy glaze when the sun goes down and temperatures drop below freezing again.

Another area of concern is parking lots due to slippery road conditions, student/staff motorists may not be able to stop or slow down.

Report any areas where signs, landmarks, corners or crosswalks have been covered by snow drifts or moving of snow that results in impairment to motorists. Areas of concern are not limited to the hazards listed above, but are any conditions you perceive that would present a danger or risk to students/staff.

Remember, snow and ice can turn familiar territory into an alien landscape for pedestrians and motorists. We can ensure you that facilities will be addressing all of the areas mentioned above, but we ask that you take responsibility by reporting any areas of concern that compromise the safety and welfare of students and staff. We ask that you be diligent and attentive to any unsafe conditions. If you note any of the conditions mentioned above please notify Public Safety, facilities or our office.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in regards to helping to safeguard everyone during the winter months.
