Semester FAQs

Will it cost more to attend a semester at RFS?
No! You pay regular tuition, plus any normal course fees. The only difference from being on campus is that you only have one choice for a meal plan.

What is the meal plan?
You sign up for the plan 5, which includes hot lunches and dinners five days a week cooked by your own RFS chef. Breakfast is provided a la carte, and weekend meals are on your own.

Do I need to have an ESS POE?
No! All semesters are open to students from all fields of study!

What are the residental life policies?
Essentially the same as on campus, with a few additional policies. Full orientation will take place the first week of classes.

What can I do for fun at the station?
There's lots of things to do! Canoeing, hiking, campfires and other outside activities, as well as wireless internet and cable TV. You are also welcome to have a car and travel away from RFS when you are not in classes or activities at the station. Unfortunately, classes are on a block schedule and it is not possible to participate in athletics, musical groups and other high commitment organizations.

Are classes my only obligation?
No. Semesters at the station are immersion learning experiences, and you will live and learn sustainably! You will be responsible for keeping all the facilities clean from your own usage, composting your food waste, and participating in service projects for the RFS.
