What to bring

Here are some suggestion for items to bring to the station:

  • Clothes for a variety of weather conditions.
    • You will want at least one set of field work clothes (things to get muddy in).
    • You may want one set of ‘nicer’ clothes for times you work with the public (attending a conference, meeting with an outside speaker, presenting your work at a local community group).
  • Hiking boots and casual shoes
  • Bathing suits
  • Sheets for extra long mattresses (standard Juniata mattress)
  • Towels
  • Tacky material to hang posters on the walls.  You may not put tacks, pushpins or other holes in the walls
  • Flashlights for night-time walks and getting around the station campus, which will not be brightly lit
  • Personal toiletries and medications (you will have time to go shopping occasionally but it is a long drive to a store using your own (or a lodge-mate’s) car and gas)
  • Sleeping bags for the occasional overnight field trip
  • A computer (computers will be available at the station, but consider bringing your own) Wired and wireless internet will be available.
  • A jump (or thumb) drive is recommended for you to backup and transfer your computer files
  • Kayaks and canoes and life jackets (optional).  Laughing Bush canoes will be available for rent and the station can provide life jackets.  If you bring your own watercraft, consider bringing a cable and lock to secure it.
  • Standard classroom supplies (notebook, pens, calculator, dictionary)
  • Binoculars
  • Camera
  • Fans
Items to organize between lodge-mates:
    • You may bring TVs, there is free cable. Please coordinate with house and roommates to minimize electrical and space usage.
    • The kitchens are lightly furnished with dishes, and utensils, so please coordinate with your lodge-mates to fully stock the kitchen.
    • Household items are not stocked, so you may wish to communicate with your lodge-mates about such items as hand soap in the bathrooms (we provide toilet paper), cleaning supplies (we provide a vacuum cleaner).
    • Cars and transport: try to maximize carpooling for shopping

What NOT to bring
  • Furniture - the lodges are already fully furnished
  • A fridge - there is already a full size fridge in each lodge, and we would like to conserve energy!
  • Air conditioners - they won't fit in the windows. Each bedroom has an overhead fan, but feel free to bring extra fans if you would like.
