Applying to the IRB

Welcome to Juniata College’s online IRB application system. Please follow the steps outlined below to determine whether your project requires IRB review and to submit the correct application for your study or research activity.

Step 1: When Is an IRB Application Required? +

An IRB application is required when conducting any survey, study, or research activity that involves human participants, human subjects, and/or identifiable private data. Any project that collects, analyzes, or uses information from individuals—even if minimal risk—is subject to IRB review.

Juniata College is strongly committed to maintaining the integrity and security of institutional data that it collects and creates. Juniata expects all those who have access to such data to treat this information with the utmost care. Step 3: Research & Human Subjects — What Do They Mean? +

Research

The federal code of regulations defines research as a systematic investigation, including research development, testing, and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.

Human Subjects

A human subject is a living individual about whom an investigator conducting research:
(i) Obtains information or biospecimens through intervention or interaction with the individual and uses, studies, or analyzes them; or
(ii) Obtains, uses, studies, analyzes, or generates identifiable private information or identifiable biospecimens.
